French Toast Recipe: A Sweet Breakfast Classic

Ingredients
  

  • 4 thick slices of day-old bread (brioche, challah, or white bread)
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter (for cooking)
  • ¼ cup sliced strawberries or bananas for topping
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions
 

  • Whisk eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and sugar in a shallow bowl
  • Heat skillet over medium; melt 1 tbsp butter
  • Dip bread in custard for 5-10 seconds per side; let excess drip off
  • Cook slices 2-3 minutes per side until golden; add butter as needed
  • Serve hot with syrup and optional fruit

Notes

  • Use stale bread for best texture
  • Don’t oversoak to avoid soggy toast
  • Keep warm in a 200°F oven
  • Store in fridge for 2 days or freeze for 1 month
